Proper Mowing Techniques

About the Video

Here are some helpful tips for those who mow their own yard. This video explains why these techniques are imperative to the health and beauty of your turf.

One piece of information we didn’t cover in the video was proper mowing height. What is the proper mowing height for your yard? That all depends on the type of grass you have. Many yards have a variety of grasses blended into them such as blue grass, fescue, rye, and others. Generally, in the spring you will want to try to keep your grass cut to a height of about 3 inches. In the summer, cut your lawn to a height of about 3.5–4 inches, depending on how hot it is and how much rain we are getting. Cutting your lawn higher in the summer allows the roots of the lawn to become larger and stronger, allowing the lawn to stay healthier even in the hottest conditions.

Remember these 6 tips when you mow your lawn and you are guaranteed to have a healthier and more beautiful turf!

  1. Keep your mower in good running condition
  2. Keep your blade(s) sharp
  3. Mow each and every week
  4. Mow in a different direction or directions each week
  5. Never cut off more than a 1/3 of the grass blade each cutting
  6. Mulch or throw your grass, but be sure it’s spread out
